Jazzercise: Using jazz music to stay active

Posted

Forget Jazz Hands! This is jazz for the whole body!

Jazzercise has been getting people moving since 1969, when a college student at Northwestern decided to add music to the workout routine.

Locally, Connie Leonardelli has been putting the rhythm in the rundown for over a quarter of a century.

She says the secret of the exercise program’s longevity has do with meeting the growing demands of each generation.

Just off of 151st and 69 Highway in Stanley/South Overland Park, the classes go just about non-stop.

While most of the participants are women, there are males in the classes and a few options for men only.

Even at 5:30 a.m. on a Monday, the parking lot was full and the Jazzercisers were in every corner of the room.

This combination of dance, resistance training, Pilates, weight-training and yoga keeps people coming.

By the way, that 1960’s college student who came up with the idea, is still the CEO and continues to come up with most of the routines.

Jazzercise is keeping the beat.
