KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For anyone celebrating a birthday in March or April, your party is probably not what you were planning due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The same is true for 7-year-old Edon Gulley from Independence, Missouri. His party with family and friends had to be canceled to abide by the social distancing rules.
His mom, Jessica, wanted to find a way to make her son's birthday a special day.
She said her son loves police officers and wants to be an officer when he grows up. She reached out to see if the Independence Police Department could get in on Edon's birthday fun.
"I called the Independence Police Department to see if they would drive by and honk and wave. I didn't think they would but they said "Of course,'" Jessica Gulley said. "Edon was sad that he could not have a birthday party with his friends and family and I just wanted to brighten up his day."
Gulley said an officer called her when they were near her house so she could get Edon outside to see them. He was able to wave and see four police officer patrol cars pass by his house, with sirens on, as they wished him a happy birthday.
Once the parade was over, there was still one more surprise for Edon.
One of the officers came back to their house and left a special gift for Edon in their mailbox, a police officer badge.
"He's just all smiles right now," his mom said.
Small actions, but big smiles for this 7-year-old boy.
