The Kansas City Kansas Fire Department had to rescue people from a balcony during an apartment fire at 3730 Bryant Circle in Kansas City, Kansas on Wednesday morning.

People living at the apartment said children were also handed over the balcony to neighbors on the ground floor.

“Every apartment here and there, they come out from the balcony and they help us and others too,” explained Lal Mawi.

Lal, his mother and father and two siblings are all displaced because of the fire.  Mawi said they will be staying at their aunt’s house for the time being. He worked as an interpreter, since a majority of residents displaced spoke Burmese.

Fire investigators tell us people can’t go back into nine apartments.  One is damaged by fire and the other eight, by smoke and water. These are located on the east end of the complex.

Mark Singer with the American Red Cross said four volunteers from their organization were out Wednesday morning to help the displaced residents. They passed out stuffed toys to the children and gave out care packages.

Mawi was just happy no one was hurt in the fire.

"No one was hurt and every neighbor came out here, and they were safe,” said Mawi.

Workers from the apartment complex did not want to speak to us, though the Red Cross said those displaced would be moving into vacant apartments on the lot.  Apartment workers also brought out breakfast for those affected by the fire.
