One person was arrested following a police pursuit Wednesday in Douglas County.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies initiated a traffic stop shortly before 5 p.m. upon locating “an individual known to have an active warrant driving a white SUV on K-10 Highway,” according to a news release posted on the office’s Facebook page.
The vehicle initally refused to yield, but stopped on K-10 Highway near the Haskell Avenue exit, at which time a woman and four children got out of the vehicle. The driver, according to the release, “refused to leave the vehicle and fled from deputies.”
Deputies began a pursuit as the SUV exited the highway at Haskell Avenue. After deputies lost sight of the vehicle, an officer in Eudora spotted it exiting a cornfield on County Road 1. The officer “initiated a second pursuit backed by Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies,” the release stated.
The pursuit ventured into Leavenworth County, but returned to Douglas County, where Lawrence police began a pursuit that was “immediately terminated to preserve public safety.”
“The white SUV was driving recklessly through town and into oncoming traffic on 6th street at high rates of speed,” the release stated. “Spike strips were deployed by Lawrence Police Department officers as the vehicle drove back into North Lawrence. The vehicle, driving on three tires and a rim, came to a stop in the 700 block of north Hickory Street. The driver exited the vehicle and fled from law enforcement on foot. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper apprehended the individual in the 700 block of Lyon street.”
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and searching for citizens who might have been affected by the pursuit. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 785-843-0250.
