KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person is dead and two suffered serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday in Independence.

The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. at 23rd Street and Noland Road when the driver of a 2020 Kia Soul rear-ended a 2013 BMW 5 Series that was stopped at a red light, according to a news release.

All parties were taken to Centerpoint Hospital. The driver of the BMW died from injuries suffered in the crash.

On Monday, police identified the driver of the BMW as 52-year-old Charles Mabie, of Independence. The driver and the passenger of the Kia Soul remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said the crash remains under investigation, but that there is no indication there was any braking before the Kia hit the BMW.
