KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday night in southern Johnson County, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. near West 207th Street and Gardner Road.

A semi tractor-trailer was stopped in the southbound lanes and the driver, identified Thursday as 54-year-old Richard Clawson of Centerville, Iowa, had exited the truck and was walking in the roadway, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said.

A four-door sedan heading northbound on Gardner Road struck Clawson as he was in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the sedan remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, the sheriff's office said.

The incident is under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Accident Investigation Team.
