1 dead after car, train crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person is dead after a crash involving a train and a car.

It happened just after 1 a.m. on Sunday at 85th Street and Prospect Ave.

According to police, the driver of the car was traveling east on 85th Street at Prospect. Police say the driver pulled around the railroad crossing arm into the westbound lane and apparently tried to beat the southbound train.

The train hit the car and dragged it approximately 60 feet until the car was pushed into the gravel between two tracks.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle.

The two engineers on the train were not injured.

Authorities say the flashing red lights were on at the crossing.

The train suffered minor damage, Union Pacific personnel responded to assess the damage to the tracks.
