1 dead following crash on U.S. 50. near Warrensburg

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person is dead after a crash Sunday afternoon on westbound U.S. Route 50 east of Missouri Route 13.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said that a 2016 Ford truck pulling a trailer was traveling east on U.S. 50 when the trailer unhitched. The trailer crossed the median, hitting a 2015 Jeep in the westbound lanes. After the trailer hit the Jeep, the Jeep “traveled off the right side of the roadway,” according to a crash report.

The driver of the Jeep, 63-year-old Walter Shannon, of Warrensburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupant, 48-year-old Laura Shannon, of Warrensburg, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Westbound U.S. 50 had been shut down at Northeast 501st Road, butone lane was re-opened around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. MSHP saidat 4:40 p.m. Sunday that they expected the highway to re-open within the hour.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit will be working the crash.
