1 person dead after being hit by SUV near construction zone

UPDATE, Sept. 2 | The victim was identified as 40-year-old David Dowthard.

ORIGINAL STORY, Aug. 20 | One person died Thursday after being hit by an SUV on Interstate 70 according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Around 1:15 a.m., the driver was heading west on I-70 near Blue Ridge Cutoff and was merging into the right lane since two other lanes were closed for construction.

Investigators say that as the driver was merging into the third lane, the driver reported hitting an unknown object.

After pulling over the driver realized they had hit a person.

The person died on the scene, and police have yet to identify the victim.

It's not clear if the person was a construction worker or why the person was near the construction zone.

The death is the city's 69th traffic-related fatality of 2020.
