KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person died in a traffic crash about 6:30 p.m. Thursday on eastbound Interstate 435 west of U.S. 169 Highway in Kansas City, Missouri.
A gray Toyota RAV4 was going east on I-435 when it ran off the highway, went through the grassy median and hit a Peterbilt tractor-trailer.
Police said the Peterbilt was going west on I-435 at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene, according to KCMO police.
His name has not been released.
The driver of the Peterbilt was not hurt, but the impact of the crash ruptured the truck's fuel tanks and set the truck and trailer on fire.
The roadway could be back open later Thursday or early Friday.
This was the 36th fatal crash in KCMO in 2025. There had been 48 fatal crashes in the city at this time a year ago.
