KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person was shot and injured by Independence police after an exchange of gunfire Monday morning near the former Rockwood Golf Club, according to police.

Independence police said officers were called to the area of Nowlin Middle School around 11:30 a.m. for a possible suicidal person in the area.

Nowlin Middle School and the nearby Korte Elementary School both went into a “brief lockdown” due to the police activity in the area.

Just before noon, officers located the person in a vehicle near East 25th Terrace South and South Hardy Avenue. The person was armed with a rifle, according to police.

Police said the person fled onto the Rockwood Golf Course, where gunfire was exchanged. The person was wounded and taken to an area hospital in unknown condition.

No officers were injured in the gunfire, police said.

The lockdown was lifted at both schools after 10 minutes, and the school day continued as normal.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
