UPDATE, 3:40 p.m. | The gas leak has been stopped, according to Overland Park Fire Department officials.
OPFD said in a tweet that Atmos Energy "shut off flow to the line."
No injuries were reported, and residents "should be able to reoccupy their homes."
ORIGNAL STORY | Crews are working to shut off a gas line that was struck early Monday afternoon in Overland Park.
Just before 2 p.m., a crew working on 159th Street struck an eight-inch gas line near Parkhill Avenue.
Atmos Energy crews were called to the scene and were waiting for a piece of equipment to shut off the valve, an Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson said.
Firefighters evacuated 18 nearby homes as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
