2 children injured, more than 40 displaced, after Lenexa apartment fire

Fire crews in Lenexa, Kansas responded to an apartment fire Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported at The Retreat at Mill Creek Apartments at 87th and Pflumm.

Two children sustained moderate injuries in the fire, officials said. They were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to fully recover. Another person had minor injuries but refused treatment, officials said.

Tegan Peckat lives in the building and said, "I was just inside feeding the baby and next thing you know I heard knocking on the door."

Matt Keenan was working behind the building when he smelled the smoke and, "Started banging on doors. She was the first one. Saw a baby in her hand, told her what can I do to help? My boss got a woman out from the window."

That woman is Vickie Bruce. She said, "There was flames everywhere. I couldn't even get out my front door. I could get out my patio. I had to actually jump through my window. I had to break my window to get out."

Bruce says she was determined to fight. "I really saw my life flash before me. When I opened that door and I saw all those flames, I said I'm not going to die like this."

Lenexa Fire tells 41 Action News 10 units are destroyed. More than 40 people are displaced. 

The Red Cross is running a shelter at Westside Family Church for those who need it.
