KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people are dead after a train struck a vehicle late Wednesday night in rural Atchison County, Kansas.

Deputies responded at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday to the area of River Road and 244th Road and located a male outside of a 2015 Hyundai Elantra who was identified as Jeremy W. McAfee, 34, of Savannah. McAfee was taken to Atchison County Hospital, where he died.

A female passenger inside the vehicle, identified as Allison L. Richardson, 38, of Platte City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the train was traveling at roughly 45 miles per hour before the crash, and the vehicle “appeared to have been stopped on the tracks.”

It is unclear, according to police, why the vehicle was on the tracks.
