1 killed, 1 injured in overnight crash in Independence

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m. Dec. 7 | Independence police said Monday that the driver of the crash died from his injuries.

Police identified him as 21-year-old Eric Vickers from Blue Springs.

The passenger in the car was treated for his injuries at an area hospital and released, according to police.

ORIGINAL, Dec. 5 | Two people went to the hospital after an overnight crash in Independence.

It happened just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at US 24 Highway and Arlington. According to police, the crash occurred when an eastbound Ford Mustang left the roadway and collided with the railroad bridge.

The driver and a passenger were transported to the hospital. The driver is in critical condition. The passenger suffered serious injuries.

Police say the crash is still under investigation, but it's believed that alcohol and high speeds were contributing factors in the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

The names of the driver and passenger are not being released at this time.
