KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Residents escaped a fire Tuesday night that damaged 27 units in a Kansas City, Missouri, apartment building.

Firefighters arrived about 6:20 p.m. to find smoke and fire roaring from a third-floor apartment at the Waldo Heights complex, 8129 Campbell Street.

Additional crews were sent to help knock down the blaze.

The fire was declared under control in about 20 minutes.

The fire's cause is under investigation.

The Kansas City Police Department's Bomb and Arson Unit is helping to find the cause, a fire department spokesman said.

The American Red Cross is helping tenants displaced from the fire with temporary shelter and other needs.
