KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people died Thursday from injuries suffered in a three-car crash on Northeast 64th Street in Gladstone, a police spokesman said.

The wreck, which happened just before 6 p.m. near the intersection with North Walrond Avenue, involved three vehicles and sent one other person to the hospital.

A westbound pickup truck on 64th Street crossed into the eastbound lanes for unknown reasons. It sideswiped one car before colliding head-on with another.

The driver of the sideswiped vehicle suffered minor injuries. The drivers of the truck and the vehicle hit head-on were killed.

Independence police confirmed one of the drivers killed was 48-year-old Det. Sgt. Jason Young who was with the department for 20 years. He was off-duty at the time.

It's not clear which vehicle Young was in. The other driver's name has not been released.

A Gladstone public safety spokesperson said one person had to be cut from their vehicle.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation by the Gladstone Police Department.
