KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Topeka man was killed Tuesday after his car broke down on the side of a Kansas City highway.

A vehicle driven by Ronald L. Smith, 75, stalled on the west shoulder of southbound Interstate 49 near Longview Road.

Smith walked across the highway for unknown reasons and was attempting to return to his vehicle when he was struck by a southbound Volkswagen.

The driver of the Volkswagen, who was not injured, stopped and cooperated with police.
