KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman faces charges of DWI resulting in death after a Monday morning crash that killed an Independence man.

According to court records, 34-year-old Naquita Williams, of Kansas City, Missouri, drove a 2003 Cadillac Escalade the wrong way early Monday in a northbound lane of Interstate 435 near 87th Street in Kansas City.

The Cadillac Escalade crashed head-on into a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by 26-year-old Danzel Campbell, of Independence. Campbell died in the wreck.

One witness told police she saw a red SUV going the wrong way on the interstate, according to court records.

She called police to report the wrong-way driver and saw the deadly crash.

A second person spotted the SUV on fire in the middle of the highway.

Two officers from the Kansas City Police Department's DUI Section interviewed Williams at the hospital. Officers detected an odor of intoxicants, and court documents state that Williams' eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

Williams refused a blood test, but officers obtained a search warrant and were able to get a blood test from Williams, according to court documents.

Williams told detectives that she was alone in the Cadillac Escalade. She said that she left her brother's house from a location unknown to her and got on a highway whose name she did not know, according to court documents.

She also told detectives that she uses her GPS to help navigate around the city and doesn't know street names.

Williams was previously convicted of DWI in January 2016.

The interstate was closed for several hours early Monday as officials investigated the wreck.
