KANSAS CITY, Mo. – No one was injured when shots rang out near a busy Country Club Plaza restaurant on Tuesday, but coverage of the incident showed the balance reporters try to strike between getting the story and staying out of harm’s way.

In this week’s 41 Files Podcast, reporters Steven Dial and Jordan Betts, along with photographer Tyler Navas, talk about their coverage of the shots fired incident.

The group talked about the importance of working with police in finding a safe place to cover the incident, as well as using social media to communicate information not just to the general public, but also to people who may have been directly involved in the search for one of the suspects.

Later in the podcast, Steven was joined by reporters Dia Wall and Tom Dempsey to talk politics.

The group broke down the latest in the race for U.S. Senate in Missouri between Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill and Republican challenger Josh Hawley.

The group also touched on the race for U.S. House in the Kansas 3rd District between Republican incumbent Kevin Yoder and Democratic challenger Sharice Davids.
