KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Blue Springs canceled its annual Independence Day celebration this year due to ongoing construction at two area high schools.

“This was a tough decision,” Mayor Carson Ross said in a news release. “This annual family event is loved by many in the community. However, with the ongoing construction at both Blue Springs and Blue Springs South High Schools, there was simply not a feasible venue to safely host the Red, White and Blue Springs Fireworks celebration.”

City Administrator Eric Johnson told 41 Action News that city officials did evaluate other possible locations for the event but could not find one that met “safety and security needs for the large crowd” that attend the display.

City staff met with school district officials months ago to evaluate options, which led to the decision to cancel the fireworks show this year, Johnson said.

Fireworks can be legally discharged within Blue Springs city limits from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 1-3 and from 10 a.m. to midnight July 4.

The city plans to host the event again in 2020.
