KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Blue Valley Northwest announced Friday that assistant principal and athletic director Kevin Gerke has died.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Dr. Kevin Gerke," a post on the school's official Twitter account read. "Dr. Gerke was an integral part of everything we do at BVNW. There aren't words to express what he means to all of us. He has left a positive impact on countless students and staff, and will be deeply missed."

Gerke, 47, is survived by his wife, Carmen, and three sons — Zach, Brett and Braden.

According to the school's website, Gerke began working at BV Northwest in 2015, where he spent the first year as an assistant principal and activities director before becoming athletic director a year later.

He spent the previous 10 years in the Belton School District, where he taught middle school social studies and served as an assistant boys' and girls' soccer coach at Belton High before taking over the Pirates boys' basketball team for nine seasons. He spent the last eight years in Belton serving as an assistant principal.

The Blue Valley School District did not indicate a cause of death.
