Business fire closes US 24 in Independence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A fire in a business caused officials to close US 24 near Dickinson Road.

The fire happened before 7 a.m. at a building that appears to house a smoke shop and audio store.

According to fire officials on scene, an officer saw smoke coming from the building and called the fire department.

We are conducting traffic control on a structure fire at US 24 Hwy and College St (Dickinson Rd). Both eastbound and westbound lanes have been shut down. Please avoid this area.

The fire was mostly contained on the upper floor of the building and was put out by firefighters.

No one was at the building at the time and no firefighters were injured battling the blaze.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway were closed. The westbound lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m. The eastbound reopened around 9:15 a.m.
