KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Center School District will break ground Thursday on its first new school building in 50 years.
As part of a $48 million no-tax-increase bond issue approved last April, the district plans to build a new Indian Creek Elementary School. Roughly 82 percent of the voters passed this.
"Even though they may not have children in the schools, they want to support, you know learning environments that are enhanced, that are safe, that are productive," Indian Creek Elementary School Principal, Dr. Angela Price said. "And so it really meant a lot to us that we had overwhelming feedback and support."
Teachers and students took part in the design process of the new building.
"They know their learners and the designers might not know our demographic," teacher, Christian Nord said, who was apart of the design process team. "so just to be able to put our opinion in there and let them know what's important to us as opposed to what looks good is how can we utilize the space in order to increase learning."
Also part of the bond approval, the district will “enhance safety and security efforts, upgrade infrastructure and maintenance projects” and “provide early childhood and elementary building updates,” according to a district news release.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the current Indian Creek Elementary, 9801 Grand Ave. The ceremony will include a program recognizing students and alumni.
