KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A car failing to stop for a Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department pumper truck responding to a call started a chain reaction crash that sent a pedestrian to the hospital with serious injuries.

Just after 11 a.m. Friday, police investigators say the pumper truck was northbound on Swope Parkway when a car failed to yield to the truck at 59th Street.

Despite attempts to avoid crashing into the car, the driver of the pumper truck struck the car, but then also struck a pedestrian who was putting items inside another car.

That pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

An occupant in a fourth vehicle was also injured, but was later released from the hospital.

The car that originally failed to yield and caused the wreck initially fled the scene but later returned. It’s not clear if she will face any charges.

No firefighters were hurt.
