Child struck by car while walking home from Lenexa school

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 12-year-old child walking home from Sunflower Elementary School on Wednesday was struck by a car, according to police in Lenexa, Kansas.

Paramedics said the child was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but the child was awake and coherent en route to the hospital, according to Shawnee Mission School District spokesman David Smith.

Emergency crews responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. near West 90th Street and Lackman Road.

A police spokesperson said the driver remained on scene and was cooperating with police.
