The community gathered to remember and honor Primitivo "Tivo" Garcia Saturday, marking the 50th anniversary of his murder.
A large crowd gathered a the elementary school bearing his name.
An award from the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas was given to Garcia posthumously.
Garcia, a Chihuahua native, arrived in Kansas City in the 60's. He began taking Englishes with his brother at Westport High school.
While waiting on a ride on November 15, 1967, they heard his pregnant teacher Margaret Kelso struggling with a pair of armed robbers trying to mug and sexually assault her.
Garcia and his brother fought off the assailants, but the 23 year-old was shot. He died during a third surgery on November 28th, 1967.
Kelso, and the daughter she was pregnant with at the time, along with others were on hand to recognize his heroism and the legacy he left 50 years ago.
