KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ride KC’s Bus Rapid Transit line, also known as MAX, will be expanding its services along Prospect Avenue and into downtown.

The line serves highly-populated corridors throughout KC.

Construction began Monday on the downtown portion, focusing on the transit facilities on 12th and Grand.

Work will begin at Petticoat and Main on Sept. 12.

Construction should finish up at both locations by the end of 2018.

One of the top priorities for this project is reducing bike and bus conflicts.

There will be bike parking and also a modified bike lane on Grand to improve cyclist safety.

A floating bus stop will be installed with bicycle traffic flowing behind the bus shelter. Transit leaders say this will be the first time this type of design will be implemented in Kansas City.

Certain bus stops will be temporarily relocated.

  • Eastbound 12th at Grand boarding will move to 12th at McGee Street.
  • Northbound Grand at 12th boarding will move south, closer to 13th Street.
  • Westbound 11th at Petticoat boarding will move east, closer to Walnut Street.

The entire Prospect MAX project should be complete by Fall 2019.
