Crash, criminal investigation slow traffic on I-35

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A police pursuit led to a crash and traffic jam on northbound Interstate 35 near 75th Street in Kansas Friday morning.

The incident happened just after 6 a.m. in Johnson County.

According to Merriam police, there was a traffic accident and criminal investigation in the area.

According to Lenexa police the incident began at the QuikTrip at College Boulevard and Pflumm Road when two cars were simultaneously stolen.

Police were attempting to stop one one of the stolen vehicles when it crashed on I-35.

That occupant ran from the scene, and police were searching the area for him.

The suspect, who police later identified as a 15-year-old juvenile, was eventually taken into custody in the area around 7 a.m.

The other stolen car was located at another location in Lenexa around the same time.

Police believe the two suspects arrived at the gas station in a car driven by a third person.

The 15-year-old juvenile was booked at the Johnson County Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center.
