KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Several crews from the Lee’s Summit Fire Department were called to a house fire Wednesday afternoon.
A Lee’s Summit Fire Department dispatcher said crews were called to the house at 1012 Southeast Third Terrace. around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The occupant, according to a news release from LSFD, reported a fire in the kitchen, and by the time crews arrived, smoke and fire were visible from the exterior of the home.
"Crews quickly knocked down the fire in the kitchen and dining room, but the fire had spread to the attic," the release stated. "The attic had been converted for use as storage, and the large amount of contents and limited access made getting to the fire difficult. As the fire spread through the attic it weakened the structure. Crews fighting the fire were removed from the building to attack the fire from a defensive position outside. Shortly after, the fire and the weight of the materials in attic caused a portion of the roof to collapse."
After crews had gotten the blaze under control, they reentered certain areas of the home to "complete extinguishment," the release stated.
Unattended food cooking on a stovetop led to the fire, according to LSFD.
