KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Several fire crews and ambulances responded to an apartment fire at 6th & Benton just after 5 a.m. Friday.

Most residents have evacuated.

One person inside the apartment said he saw smoke, woke up three other tenants and called 911. He said when fire crews arrived, they rescued two people from one of the apartment's balcony.

The fire started on the building's back deck, but the extent of the damage and any potential injuries have not been confirmed.

Chief Hugh Oldham of KCFD said a smoke detector went off, likely saving lives and prompting a quicker response from the department.

The fire marshal on scene stressed that KCFD has a new batch of smoke detectors to give away for free. Just stop in at your local fire station and grab one.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
