KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hey, Santa! Better be ready! The season is upon us thanks to the elves at Crown Center.
Thursday, the Mayor’s Christmas Tree rolled in from Oregon. Of course, most of the branches were sawed off for transport but they will be reattached today when the towering sign of the season is put in place.
Since the 19th century, the Kansas City Mayor’s Christmas tree fund has been helping those in need in our town.
This year, the wooden ornaments made out of last year’s tree are in the shape of skates.
And that takes us to the ice: The Crown Center Ice Terrace began its 45th season of gliding, slipping and sliding on Friday morning.
According to Anne Deuschle of Crown Center, in the early days, there was no tent above the ice. The sun could be a problem back then.
Today, in addition to protection from above, there’s a brand new freezing system underneath.
For many families, this first day of skating is an early tradition, taking advantage of the free skating and hot chocolate from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The paid sessions start at 10 a.m. from now well into 2018.
From the holiday tree to the ice, it is truly becoming the most wonderful time of the year, as the song goes.
