Man's shooting death in KCMO being investigated as homicide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, police were investigating a homicide in the 2700 block of Benton Boulevard on Monday morning after initially calling it a death investigation.

Police said they were dispatched on a disturbance call shortly after 1 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a man unresponsive near a home.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Derrick Smith, was given first aid and taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said Smith suffered a gunshot wound, and detectives were investigating his death as a homicide.

Police do not know what led up to his death, and investigators were searching the area for any witnesses or information.
