KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Developers are planning to turn the old Home Quarters shopping center at Interstate 435 and Bannister Road into a sports and recreation facility.

The proposal is being put forth by Elite Sports, which has locations in Olathe, Overland Park and Lenexa.

The proposal is set to go before the Kansas City, Missouri City Council’s Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee next week.

Committee chair Councilman Scott Taylor says the neighborhood is excited about the proposal, which could give a shot in the arm to the development prospects in the area that have been dominated almost solely by the massive Cerner Innovation Campus.

The proposal calls for some site improvements, including the parking lot and landscaping, but the footprint of the building itself will remain mostly the same.

Renderings submitted to the city call for several indoor courts, meeting rooms, a fitness area, netted baseball batting tunnels and a sports medicine area.

An e-mail to Elite Sports for more information wasn't immediately returned Monday morning.
