KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A sidewalk in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, first reported broken in July, remains unrepaired months later.

According to 311 records, a service request for a broken sidewalk along Walnut Street between 7th and 8th Streets was made on July 29. The request indicated the sidewalk had been broken 15 days prior.

City officials determined the crumbled sidewalk was caused by a water leak and that repairs were the responsibility of the property owner.

By Aug. 14, city inspectors had visited the site and determined the water leak had been repaired and listed the service request as “resolved.”

But when 41 Action News drove by Thursday morning, the sidewalk remained unrepaired.

"You have to walk out into the street which isn’t preferable when there’s oncoming traffic especially with pets,” Jacob McConnaughy said.

It’s an eyesore many who live and work near the sidewalk are frustrated about.

"We’re heading to almost October and this sidewalk has been closed for the better part of two months,” Scott Harris said.

KC Water, who initially turned off the water because of the leak, had a neighborhood preservation officer inspect a complaint received from the 311 Action Center. The officer noticed the sidewalk is disrepair and informed the property owner they have 30 days to fix the violation from Sept. 4th.

It’s a problem many want the property owners to fix soon.

"It’s a little unusual for a dispute to have dragged on this long,” Harris said.

"For people that live down here, why is it taking this long to get filled in?” McConnaughy asked.

Management at the Walnut Towers said they hope to fix the sidewalk sometime next week.
