Dozens gathered at the corner of 6th and Elmwood in northeast Kansas City Saturday evening, the same location Nicholas Walker was murdered a little over one year ago.
"For his life to end the way it did, it's the most tragic moment in my life,” said Tanitha Walsh, Walker’s mother. "I hope to accomplish to get this murder solved."
Walker was killed the week before Christmas 2015. He was found inside his car shot to death at 6th and Elmwood. KCPD still haven't found his killer.
"If anyone knows who did this to my son please come forward, so my son can rest in peace,” said Walsh to 41 Action News cameras Saturday evening.
KCMO recorded an 18-year high in homicides in 2016, registering 128 murders. So far, the 2017 homicide rate is just as high.
"Our answers lie in our community,” said Roslyn Temple, director of Mothers In Charge.
Mothers In Charge is a group operated by mothers who have lost their children to homicides in Kansas City. Temple tries her best to show up to every homicide scene to give comfort and support to families. She believes there are plenty of people in the community with information that will lead to arrests but refuse to talk. She is urging those people to step up in order to find the people responsible for killings such as Walker’s.
"If we allow it to get back up to where it was last year, we are the problem,” said Temple.
Walsh believes the same.
"And there's so many children lost and we just want the crime to stop and that's what I ask,” she said.
There have been 15 homicides in KCMO as of February 11. There were 14 on that date in 2016.
Anyone with information regarding a violent crime is urged to call anonymously to the TIPS hotline – 816-474-TIPS.
