OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Eight people have been displaced from their homes after an early morning quadplex fire in the 9400 block of Nieman.

Crews reported heave smoke showing from the two-story building on arrival just after eight a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters located a fire in a walkout basement on one unit, which had then spread to other units, and included the first and second floors as well as the attic.

All four units suffered damage, and the fire was under control in about an hour.

All residents were reported out safe, but five adults and three children have been displaced due to the fire.

Some residents reported they awoke to the smell of smoke, and that they did not hear smoke alarms, but fire crews heard them from other units during the firefight.

Today is the start of National Fire Safety Week, residents are encouraged to check their smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
