KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Department of Justice is being used as part of a new scam that targets the elderly, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Kansas Stephen McAllister.
The scammers claim to be with the Department of Justice in hopes of securing personal information from the people they call, according to a news release sent Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the caller will attempt to gain that information during an initial phone call or will leave a return phone number that "directs users to a recorded menu that matches the recorded menu for the department's main phone number."
The caller will be directed to an "investigator," according to the release, who will try to access the caller's personal information.
Anyone who receives a call that they believe is part of this scam is asked to report it to the Federal Trade Commission through its website or by calling 877-832-4357.
