KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An Overland Park man was killed in a wreck that shut down eastbound Interstate 435 during rush hour Wednesday.

The crash happened around 3:15 p.m. between U.S. 69 and Antioch Road on eastbound I-435, according to a release from the Overland Park Police Department.

Police on Thursday said Thomas Apel was killed in the crash. Apel was stopped on the right shoulder of the interstate with his vehicle's emergency flashers on when a second car ran off the road and hit his vehicle.

The driver of the other car sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital, police said.

Investigators do not know why that driver ran off the road and onto the shoulder.

The wreck shut down all eastbound lanes and created a miles-long traffic backup.

A second, less serious wreck occurred in the westbound lanes of I-435 in the same area.

Overland Park police ask anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to call the Overland Park PD Traffic Unit at 913-895-6407.
