Female inmates returning to Jackson County Jail

and last updated

It was just five weeks ago that all 23 women in the Jackson County Jail were removed after two women said male inmates raped them. Now, the city says it is safe for them to return.

The city said that they have made changes to security, but they are not giving out the specifics. The city confirms they have been meeting weekly with jail staff to work through the issues.

The women said men regularly came onto the floor without warning, despite a policy that says they must be announced. One inmate faces rape and burglary charges in connection with the first assault. Charges have yet to be filed in the other case.

Jackson County has hired an independent auditor to review all procedures and operations at the jail. In addition to local police, the FBI is also conducting its own investigation into abuse allegations.
