When the Harvesters refrigerated truck pulls up to the Bishop Sullivan Center Food Pantry, there’s no time to waste.
Milk has to be taken from the truck and put in the refrigerator quickly to make sure it stays cold and safe.
“Milk is one of the top five items that food banks are looking for,” Mike Wedel, the director of acquisition at Harvesters, said. “It’s very difficult to get donated because of its short shelf-life. It takes special systems to store it and transport it."
Harvesters has a new partnership getting regular milk shipments from Hiland Dairy, but thousands of children and families need milk.
