KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Firefighters battled a stubborn two-alarm fire Tuesday night in a Kansas City apartment building.

Two firefighters were taken to a hospital.

One suffered a medical problem and the other a rib injury, according to a fire department spokesman.

Neither was life-threatening.

Crews arrived about 7:20 p.m. at the apartment complex at 119 West 99th Terrace.

They went inside the three-story building and found thick smoke on the second and third floors.

The fire was in a second floor apartment.

Crews helped several residents off their balconies to safety.

It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control.

No word on the cause of the fire.
