KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Firefighters are still trying to determine the exact cause of a large house fire Saturday in the 1600 block of Ruby Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

The massive blaze, which billowed thick black smoke and took several hours for KCK Fire Department crews to get under control, occurred around 8 p.m. and destroyed the multi-story house.

A KCKFD spokesman told 41 Action News the house is a total loss and said there are reports of illegal activity before the fire started. An incendiary device may have started the inferno.

Fire could be seen coming out of the roof and sides of the house, which forced emergency crews to go defensive in battling the blaze.

Ladder trucks were needed to get water onto the roof and prevent the fire from jumping to the other homes nearby.

There is no word if anyone was inside the home or injured during the incident.
