The flu is hitting Kansas City hard this year, with Jackson County Health Department reporting 1,100 cases.
The Kansas Department of Health is reporting this year’s flu season is four times worse than last year.
At the University of Kansas Microbiology testing center, they are testing people around the clock with around 100 patients a week.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most common strain right now is Influenza A.
Doctors at KU say this flu season is unique because some people who have gotten the flu shot are still getting the flu. Doctors still advise people to get their shot because it will still help.
"The good news is if they get it it's very mild case, we have not seen hospitalized patients that have influenza that have received the vaccine so people who have had the vaccine if they get it they end up not having to come in with severe illness," said Chief Medical Officer University at Kansas Hospital Dr. Lee Norman
Dr. Norman says it is not too late in the season to get a flu shot.
