KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former Kansas City, Missouri, IRS employee was charged in federal court with stealing refunds from taxpayers, according to prosecutors.

Tamara Miller, 39, who worked as a data transcriber at the Kansas City Service Center, was arrested and charged with two counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft and two counts of theft of public money.

According to the federal indictment, Miller, who handled individual income tax returns received by mail, used taxpayers’ names and Social Security numbers to apply for accounts at online banks that issued prepaid credit cards. She then used the routing and account numbers of the fraudulent accounts to alter taxpayers' forms and set up deposits for their refunds.

Two of the victims, who were cited in the indictment, lost a combined total of $5,214, prosecutors said.
