KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police in Kansas City hope filing a tax return will lead to a positive relationship between officers and members of the community.

The department partnered with the University of Missouri Extension Office and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance to host five events where qualifying individuals can receive help filing their tax returns.

Officer Rita Olson-Stawicki said getting people inside a police station breaks down barriers between the community and officers. It allows both sides to build a relationship without having already called 911.

“We're more than just police and putting people in jail,” Olson-Stawicki said. “We're here to help people and fill that need. If we don't have the answers, we'll look for them.”

To qualify for the free assistance, you could not have made more than $54,000 in adjusted gross income in 2017. There is no appointment necessary, volunteers help those who qualify on a first come, first served basis.
