10-year-old girl recovering after brother found unattended gun, shot her in leg

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A girl was hospitalized after suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound Sunday at a Merriam home.

Merriam police said they are investigating the shooting which happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of Farley Court.

Police said a 9-year-old boy found an unattended gun, which somehow went off. The bullet struck his 10-year-old sister in the leg.

She was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Johnson County Crime Lab was called in to assist with the investigation, which is limited to the residence.

No one has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, a Merriam police spokesman said.

Merriam police also said they distribute free gun locks and encourage gun owners to properly secure their firearms with one.
