Capt. Tye Grant with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department said the suspect in a standoff is dead after he was shot by police.

Grant said police shot the suspect, 43-year-old Carlos Garcia, as he came out of the home wielding a long gun.

The standoff at 35th and Bellefontaine began after officers from KCPD and the DEA were shot at while trying to issue a federal search warrant.

The authorities arrived at the KCMO residence around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When members of the DEA task force entered the home, Garcia reportedly began shooting at them. Officers returned fire and were successful in backing away to a more secure area of safety.

Gunshots had been heard coming from the residence during the standoff.

Police surrounded the area and attempted to get the suspect to surrender.

Garcia was shot as he exited the home wielding a long gun, according to police.

It's unclear at this time why the KCPD and DEA were issuing the search warrant.

A second man, Michael J. Wilkins, 25, of Kansas City, was charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Missouri. An affidavit said Wilkins was seen entering the residence with a black bag and later walking out with the bag as well as a white box. When officers approached him, Wilkins fled on foot. He was soon taken into custody and arrested for fleeing and resisting arrest.

According to the affidavit, police found five gallon-sized plastic bags of methamphetamine in a white Corona beer box in his car. Police also found a Citadel M1911-A1 CS handgun and a black backpack that contained $12,363 and a plastic bag with methamphetamine inside. They also found a tool bag that contained methamphetamine.
