LENEXA, Kan. — From trails to crosswalks and bike lanes, this Thursday the City of Lenexa will reveal the beginnings of its complete streets policy.

The city's Transportation Manager Steve Schooley said the city began the process last fall of developing plans to guide future design of roads. The city will unveil some of the guidelines Thursday and ask the public to give feedback as it finalizes the policy.

"We could probably sit in a dark room and come up with a plan, but it wouldn't necessarily be what the citizens would like to see," Schooley said. "It's important they share their ideas and get some input on this so we do develop a plan that meets everybody's needs and desires."

Schooley said complete streets are roads designed with every use in mind, so they better suit cars, buses, bicycles and walkers, for example. He said some streets in the city are more than 60 years old and don't fit with today's uses.

Lenexa will expand wide sidewalk trails around the city this year; creating a designated space for walkers and bicyclists separate from vehicles. Construction will begin this spring along Renner Boulevard from 90th Street to 95th and then in both east and west on 95th Street.

The complete streets meeting is Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Thompson Barn at 11184 Lackman Road. During the open house, you can come and go as you please.
