KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Kansas City charity needs help making Christmas special for families in need this year. Della Lamb Community Services will begin handing out toys, clothes and holiday meals Friday as part of its 44th Annual Operation Santa Claus.
This season, the group is helping a smaller number of families because it didn’t receive as many donations. It plans to help about 850 families compared to the 1,100 it typically serves.
But the executive director says the organization can reach more families if more donations come in.
“It brings the brightness of the holidays into the homes of families who are struggling,” Judy Akers from Della Lamb said.
The organization is asking for donations from now through next week. A $50 contribution can pay for gifts and food for an entire family. Other items Della Lamb needs are children’s socks and underwear, toys under $15, hats and gloves for children and adults, and frozen turkeys.
You can visit thegroup’s website to make a financial donation. Drop off items at 500 Woodland Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.
“We see tears, hugs, thank you in a million different languages. It just really warms the heart. It truly makes my own holiday. I'm grateful to be a part of it all these years,” Akers said, describing handing out the Christmas packets to families.
